Herring knowledge - Recommendations and capacity building (Component 5)

Activities in this project component aim at developing Joint Recommendations for an improved consideration of coastal spawning area management within overall integrated coastal and maritime management. They will consolidate findings of component 3 and 4 in a Synthesis Report and develop deductive recommendations.

Taking into account the ecological status, present and future human activity impacts, and the current management instruments and their effectiveness, the project will develop the following target group-specific project results:

Factsheets will inform and educate local stakeholders (such as local fishermen, angler or sailors); Policy Briefs will address regional managing authorities (such as county administrations, municipalities or other regional public bodies) in the case study countries, and transnational pan-Baltic management organisations

To attract widespread attention and to gain feedback from all relevant stakeholders, the developed outputs will be presented at a Transnational Symposium. To assure open management doors and tailored outputs, the interviews in component 4 will be used to gain information on the demands and required formats on the developed management recommendations. The policy briefs will integrate recommendations for an eco-system friendly and integrated spawning area management and a long term vision for the management of natural coastal resources in the South Baltic region.

Results will finally also be connected to the on-going work of the ICES Herring Assessment Working Group, to the cross-border scientific cooperation in the context of Herring larval surveys, and into relevant HELCOM working groups.
